Broadcom launches single-chip Wi-Fi solution for embedded devices

WICED â„¢ SoC helps OEMs quickly integrate Wi-Fi functionality into a range of low-power consumer products

News highlights:

• Integrate Wi-Fi, rich application programming interface (API) and full-featured software development kit (SDK) on a single chip

• Help microcontroller embedded devices to reduce power consumption and reduce costs, including weighing gauges, temperature adjustment devices, surveillance cameras, etc.

• Validate and connect with cloud services using an efficient “autonomous” software stack of a single SoC solution

Beijing, June 4, 2013- Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM), a leader in global innovative solutions for wired and wireless communications semiconductors, announced the launch of a new Wi-Fi SoC for embedded devices. The BCM4390 chip is part of Broadcom ’s Wireless Internet Conviction for Wireless Devices (WICED) product portfolio and will be exhibited at the 2013 Taipei International Computer Show. Broadcom's single-chip design provides OEMs with a highly integrated, low-power, and low-cost solution. This design will inspire a series of new consumer products to appear in the explosively developing "Internet of Things" market. For more news, please visit Broadcom ’s press room.

Consumers are increasingly demanding home and portable wireless connections, and it is expected that the number of connected devices on the market will reach 30 billion units in 20201. Adding Wi-Fi to a device with no connection function is a complicated process, and it also brings cost and power consumption. Especially for products with limited energy and battery power, power consumption is a very challenging problem.

"The power consumption problem of the Internet of Things requires us to provide superior advanced technology in an extremely simple way." Said Brian Bedrosian, senior director of Broadcom's embedded wireless / wireless connection portfolio business unit. The industry ’s highest level of integration and significantly reduced power consumption. By using this solution, our customers can add connectivity to a wider variety of products in mature and emerging markets. "

Broadcom's new WICED BCM4390 SoC is suitable for 8- and 16-bit microcontroller systems, helping low-power, battery-powered devices to achieve Wi-Fi connectivity. Applications initially supported by BCM4390 include sports fitness, health, and security and automation. Innovative technologies based on the WICED platform can help OEMs to use a single chip to connect to smaller household appliances, including slow cookers and lamps.

main feature:

• Flexible implementation of real-time operating system (RTOS) and network protocol stack in the application central processing unit (CPU)

• Complies with IEEE 802.11b / g / n standard

• Integrated 2.4 GHz radio frequency (RF) supports single-stream 11n devices

• Tx and Rx low-density check codes (LDPC) expand the range and improve energy efficiency

• On-chip power amplifier (PA) and low noise amplifier (LNA)

• Optional external PA and LNA supporting high power and wide range of applications

• Supports secure digital input and output (SDIO) (50 MHz, 4 bits and 1 bit) and serial peripheral interface (SPI) (48 MHz) bus interface, as well as I2C, universal asynchronous transceiver (UART), I2S serial port

• Supports 2.3V to 5.5V battery voltage

Product availability:

Broadcom BCM4390 is facing early customer samples, and mass production is expected in the fourth quarter of 2013.
