On November 14, NetEase Smart News reported that Alibaba's smart speaker, Tmall Genie X1, exceeded one million units in sales during the Double 11 shopping festival. This impressive achievement highlights the growing demand for smart home devices in China. Before the Double 11 event, Alibaba drastically reduced the price of the Tmall Genie X1 from its original $499 to just 99 yuan after coupons—less than a fifth of the original cost. This aggressive pricing strategy made the device an attractive option for early adopters, leading to a surge in sales and a rapid market penetration that surprised many in the industry. Industry experts suggest that such promotions are not unusual. According to Xie Taoxia, CEO of Haizhi Smart, a Chinese voice technology company, it's normal for big players like Alibaba to use such tactics to boost market presence. Before Xiaomi lowered its speaker price to 299 yuan, the entire sector was still finding its footing. The smart speaker market in China has never been particularly hot, but these tech giants have played a key role in driving growth. Previously, the domestic smart speaker market was still in its early stages. Analysts believed that the Chinese market would take another year or two before reaching the million-unit sales threshold. However, with Alibaba’s aggressive marketing, the market has accelerated rapidly. As Li Zhifei, CEO of a tech startup, remarked, traditional brands and long-term tech companies seem outmatched by the financial power and market strategies of internet giants. Currently, there are numerous smart speakers available in both domestic and international markets. For example, Amazon’s Echo series starts at around 660 yuan, Google Home at about 860 yuan, Rokid Moonstone at 1,399 yuan, Qwen’s speaker at 999 yuan, Himalayan Xiaoya at 999 yuan, LouLouLou’s second generation at 799 yuan, and Xiaomi’s Little Love Student at 299 yuan. On one hand, this is the result of market stimulation by big players. On the other hand, from a rational perspective, selling at 99 yuan means Alibaba can’t even cover the production costs. Despite this, the company seems willing to sacrifice short-term profits for long-term market dominance. It's clear that both Alibaba and Xiaomi are using low prices to capture market share early on. The Tmall Genie X1, which dropped from 499 to 99 yuan, has not only boosted sales but also helped educate consumers about smart speakers. This move has pushed the Chinese smart speaker market past the one-million-unit milestone and into a more mature phase. Moreover, having a large user base early on allows Tmall Genie to refine its products based on real-world usage. Looking ahead, Xie Dianxia predicts that China’s smart speaker market could surpass 10 million units in 2018. However, some industry insiders suggest that Alibaba may face production challenges as it tries to meet the high demand.
