MicroLED will replace OLED, Samsung will launch the first Micro LED TV in 2018
MicroLED is emerging as a promising next-generation display technology, drawing significant attention from major tech companies like Apple, Samsung, and TSMC. However, Apple's journey in MicroLED development hasn't been smooth. Recent reports suggest that the company is now collaborating with TSMC to advance its own MicroLED screen technology.
In contrast, Samsung appears to be making more progress in this field. According to industry sources, the South Korean giant is set to unveil its first MicroLED TV at the upcoming CES 2018 event in Las Vegas. The model will feature a massive 150-inch display, with plans for mass production and market release later that year.
MicroLED is widely seen as a potential successor to OLED technology, offering several advantages. Compared to OLED, MicroLED can reduce the size of LED units to under 100 micrometers, addressing issues like screen burn-in and extending the lifespan of the display. Additionally, MicroLED panels are thinner, consume less power, offer higher brightness, faster response times, and superior resolution and image quality.
Another key benefit is the flexibility of the technology. When paired with a plastic substrate, it becomes easier to create curved or flexible displays, opening up new design possibilities.
Although Sony was one of the first to showcase a 55-inch MicroLED TV back in 2012, the technology has yet to reach widespread commercial availability. Meanwhile, both Samsung and Apple continue to invest heavily in its development, signaling its potential to reshape the future of display technology.
