Scientists have created farm robots capable of identifying when crops are fully ripe and selectively picking only the best produce. These machines can also remove unedible or damaged vegetables, reducing waste and improving efficiency. Experts believe that such technology could be widely adopted by 2020, revolutionizing the way farmers manage their fields.
Currently, manual harvesting often leads to inefficiencies, with up to 60% of crops being wasted due to improper timing or handling. To address this issue, engineers at Harper Adams University are working on an autonomous machine that can sow seeds, weed, water, and spray without human intervention. This system not only improves productivity but also reduces labor costs and environmental impact.
The machine can be programmed to harvest at the optimal time, ensuring higher quality yields. Researchers predict that by 2020, robotic systems will be commonly used in farmlands across the country. This innovation is expected to bring about a new era of precision agriculture, where every step of the process is optimized for sustainability and efficiency.
Professor Simon Blackmore from Harper Adams University explains, "We're developing a new agricultural system based on small, intelligent machines. We’re also working on laser weeding and drip irrigation technologies to ensure that chemicals are applied precisely, control the harvest, and pick the best time for collection."
He adds that up to 20-60% of crops are discarded because they are harvested too early or too late. Supermarkets often reject imperfect vegetables, and consumers are reluctant to buy them. Robots can help solve this problem by selecting only the best produce, while leaving some crops to mature further if needed.
For example, a robot might skip certain lettuce plants today, knowing they’ll be ready for sale next week. This level of precision helps reduce waste and increase profitability for farmers.
Although the exact mechanics of the robot remain undisclosed, and its cost has not been revealed, the potential benefits are clear. As these technologies continue to evolve, they promise to reshape the future of farming—making it smarter, more efficient, and more sustainable.
