Eaton’s new HART multiplexer provides total communication solutions for plant safety and monitoring
Eaton, a leading power management company, has launched a new range of MTL HART multiplexers designed to ensure a stable and efficient connection between field devices and plant control systems. These advanced multiplexers integrate predictive maintenance diagnostics into the broader plant asset management strategy, helping users minimize unplanned downtime and improve system reliability. The series includes three multi-channel collectors: MTL4851, MTL4852, and MTL4854, all engineered to work seamlessly with the latest HART-enabled process instruments.
The MTL4851 and MTL4852 multiplexers offer a scalable solution with 16 to 256 channels per node, making them compact and easy to configure. Their ability to automatically detect communication parameters eliminates the need for physical switches on the module, while their faster scanning rate—up to three times that of similar products—significantly reduces debugging time, costs, and project risks. These features make them ideal for both retrofitting existing systems and supporting new installations.
When used together, the MTL4851 and MTL4852 provide access to device health and process data, enabling connections to up to 8,000 devices on a single network. With ET-485 devices, integration with Ethernet is straightforward, and these multiplexers offer the lowest per-channel cost in the MTL product line.
The MTL4854 multiplexer stands out by offering four HART modems for 32 channels, allowing simultaneous access to multiple devices. For instance, while one channel is used for partial stroke testing on a valve positioner, others can continue monitoring, enabling plant managers to perform parallel communications and optimize processes in real time.
This new model complements the existing MTL4850 HART multiplexer, which is also certified for use with SIL3-rated safety equipment. Andrew Ingrey, Technology Manager at Eaton’s Crouse-Hinds division, highlighted the benefits of the new multiplexers: “With the new multi-channel collector, we’ve more than tripled performance to meet the needs of both retrofit and new projects. Our team has worked hard to simplify installation and reduce downtime, ensuring that engineers can quickly deploy HART multi-channel collectors with minimal configuration effort.â€
The MTL HART Multiplexer is compatible with traditional I/O-based process control systems, making it suitable for both new and upgraded applications. It supports intrinsically safe and standard environments and is fully modular and scalable, allowing users to expand their systems as needed. Multi-channel collectors can be connected using existing intrinsically safe backplanes, custom backplanes, or terminal strips for conventional setups.
Additionally, the MTL HART Multiplexer Device Type Manager (DTM) enables compatibility with all Field Device Tools (FDT) packages. DTM files are available for download from the MTL website, and the latest AMS device management software supports these files.
As part of the Eaton Crouse-Hinds portfolio, MTL products deliver exceptional instrumentation and protection for the process control industry. Key applications include intrinsic safety, fieldbus, industrial networks, surge protection, HMI systems, gas analysis, and alarm management. For more information, visit the official Eaton website.
