Chinese Academy of Engineering Zhao Shuping: Advanced VR will be with AI "You have me, I have you"

Virtual reality (VR) has become a familiar experience for many. In one corner of the mall, an individual dons a headset and sits in a specialized chair, entering a vivid digital world that defies traditional logic—where the helmet and seat are no longer just physical objects but gateways to an immersive environment. Yet, entertainment is only the tip of the iceberg. As Zhao Shuping, an academician from the Chinese Academy of Engineering, highlighted during the 10th "Leading Industry Technology Lecture" on November 22, VR's potential extends far beyond leisure. He presented a comprehensive view of "VR+" technology, emphasizing how it will reshape not only perception but also the way we interact with the world. According to Zhao, virtual reality could redefine human experience by dividing our perception into real and virtual modes, potentially creating a new dimension of existence. "Is VR a disruptive force?" Zhao asked, suggesting that the answer lies in how we approach technological innovation. The integration of VR into daily life is already beginning to transform industries, offering new ways of interaction, visualization, and engagement. VR is defined as a computer-generated environment that simulates real-world or imagined spaces, using specialized equipment to create visual, auditory, and tactile experiences that mirror reality. Its disruptive impact spans multiple domains, including display technology, human-computer interaction, and even social platforms. Zhao outlined six key areas where VR could bring about transformation: moving from two-dimensional to three-dimensional displays, breaking through screen size limitations, enabling natural interaction between humans and virtual environments, building digital replicas of physical spaces, creating new testing and verification platforms across industries, and redefining internet access and social interaction. He described a future where online interactions take place in shared virtual spaces, such as meeting in a digital version of the Summer Palace. This shift could revolutionize how people connect, making virtual meetings more engaging and realistic. Beyond social applications, VR has the potential to change media consumption, allowing users to actively choose their viewing angles and focus on specific elements, rather than passively watching content. It is also reshaping industries like aerospace, defense, education, healthcare, and smart cities, serving as a critical technological platform for innovation and development. In healthcare, for example, VR is being used to simulate complex medical scenarios, aiding in training, research, and treatment. Virtual human bodies—digital representations of real people—are being developed to support medical experiments and improve patient care. Zhao envisions a future where every child is born with a digital twin, growing alongside them and enabling safe medical trials without risk. Looking ahead, VR is expected to give rise to three major industries: consumer, professional, and industrial VR. These sectors will continue to evolve, driven by advancements in computing, graphics, and artificial intelligence. The integration of VR and AI is another significant trend. As VR moves from its original "3I" characteristics—immersion, interactivity, and imagination—to include a fourth "I" for intelligence, it is becoming more adaptive, responsive, and intelligent. This convergence opens new possibilities for smarter interfaces, more accurate modeling, and enhanced user experiences. Ultimately, VR is not just a tool for entertainment—it is a transformative force that will shape the future of technology, society, and human interaction. As Zhao emphasized, the journey of VR is just beginning, and its full potential is yet to be realized.
