What are the characteristics and differences between clean sheds and clean rooms?

Clean sheds are typically constructed using industrial aluminum (or stainless steel square frames, iron square pass spray) as the framework. They utilize a Fan Filter Unit (FFU) for air supply and are enclosed with anti-static curtains or tempered glass. This setup allows the internal environment to achieve a cleanliness level of up to 100–10,000. These structures are ideal for areas where localized purification is required during operations.

A Clean Room, also known as a cleanroom, serves as the foundation for pollution control. Without a clean room, it would be nearly impossible to mass-produce components that require high levels of cleanliness. According to FED-STD-2, a clean room is defined as a space equipped with air filtration, distribution, and optimization systems, along with specific construction materials and equipment, all designed to maintain controlled airborne particulate concentrations at an appropriate level.

Compared to full-scale clean rooms, many customers opt to build clean sheds due to lower costs. However, some clients prefer not to construct a full clean room. In such cases, features like air conditioning systems, air showers, and transfer windows may not be included. The cost of a clean shed is generally between 40% to 60% of that of a clean room, depending on the materials used and the size of the structure. The larger the area, the closer the cost becomes to that of a full clean room.

Advantages of a Clean Shed:

  • Each FFU has its own fan, providing independent airflow

Disadvantages of a Clean Shed:

  • High noise levels due to the large number of FFUs
  • Frequent maintenance due to multiple fans
  • Can feel stuffy due to limited air circulation
  • Shorter filter lifespan if not installed in a clean room, leading to higher long-term costs
