The Hongqi sedan has always followed the development philosophy of "two highs and one whole"—high-end quality, high safety standards, and comprehensive comfort. It is positioned as a luxury vehicle in the high-end market. For many years, Hongqi has been building the image of China's first premium automotive brand. However, despite its prestigious status, Hongqi's sales performance under FAW Group has been slow, even struggling at times. One major factor is its high price, which makes it unattainable for many potential buyers.
In November 2023, Hongqi officially separated from FAW Group, gaining independence. This move marked a turning point. In its first month after leaving FAW, the Hongqi H7 achieved a sales volume of over 1,001 units in December, a promising start. From January to November last year, total sales reached more than 3,000 units—this data was truly surprising and signaled a potential revival.
Since the launch of the Hongqi H7 in 2013, its sales have remained weak, consistently declining. Despite being built with a budget of 5 billion yuan to establish itself as China’s premier brand, the car struggled to find its place in the market. The high price of the Hongqi L5, reaching up to 5 million yuan—comparable to Maybach—was a significant barrier for most consumers. After separating from FAW, the brand took a different approach by lowering prices and launching the new Hongqi H5, estimated to be priced around 200,000 yuan, targeting the mid-size segment.
In terms of design, the Hongqi H5 breaks away from the previous overly formal style. Its target audience is no longer just mature customers; instead, it caters to younger generations with modern, dynamic aesthetics. The front design still retains the family-style face, featuring a large, vertical waterfall grille, black-lighted LED headlights, and a horizontal red flag emblem. The overall look is tall and elegant, blending classic elements with contemporary flair. The body is sleek and stylish, with dual taillights on both sides of the car, framed by the word "Hongqi." The rear features a flat dual exhaust system that adds a sense of sophistication.
Inside, the Hongqi H5 continues the theme of fashion and dynamism. A suspended LCD screen is mounted above the center console, while the multi-function buttons below are designed simply and elegantly. The three-dimensional steering wheel enhances the driving experience, and the entire interior is finished in black leather, offering a clean yet luxurious feel.
In terms of dimensions, the Hongqi H5 measures 4935 mm in length, 1840 mm in width, and 1470 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2870 mm. While slightly smaller than the Hongqi H7, the internal space remains ample, especially in the rear. Paired with 19-inch aluminum alloy wheels and 225/45 ZR19 Farroad tires, the car exudes a sporty and refined atmosphere.
Under the hood, the Hongqi H5 is powered by a 1.8T turbocharged engine, delivering 178 horsepower and 250 Nm of torque, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. This combination ensures a balanced blend of performance and efficiency, making it a compelling option in the mid-size luxury segment.
