TCL Group Announces Latest Business Announcement Sales of Smart TVs reached 1,024,300
On October 13, 2017, TCL Group released its quarterly report detailing the performance of its product sales and service business. The announcement highlighted that key divisions, including Multimedia Electronics, Home Appliances, and China Star Optoelectronics, maintained strong growth momentum during the third quarter. Additionally, the company's smart network TV operation platform and mobile internet application platform saw significant year-over-year improvements, reflecting a robust performance in both product development and service delivery.
In the third quarter of 2017, TCL Group sold 6.691 million units of LCD TVs (including commercial displays), representing a 9.35% increase compared to the same period in 2016. Domestic sales reached 2.18 million units, while international sales totaled 4.332 million units. Smart Internet TV sales hit 4.082 million units, up 16.3% year-on-year, with domestic sales reaching 1.64 million units—accounting for 75.2% of total LCD TV sales in China.
By September 2017, cumulative LCD TV sales (including commercial displays) had reached 16.476 million units, an increase of 10.51% year-on-year. Meanwhile, smart TV sales climbed to 102.403 million units, a 27.79% rise compared to the previous year. Despite rising panel prices earlier in the year, which led many manufacturers to raise prices, TCL managed to maintain stable sales. By July, panel prices slightly declined, leading to a modest recovery in industry-wide sales. In this challenging environment, TCL’s consistent performance underscored its strong market position and strategic foresight in investing in the panel industry.
For panel makers, 2017 was a promising year. Although panel prices dipped slightly over the past two months, the overall market remained favorable. TCL’s Huaxing Optoelectronics performed well, producing 850 million LCD glass substrates in Q3, up 10.51% year-on-year. From January to September, the output reached 2.478 million, marking a 23.29% increase. China Star Optoelectronics also reported growth, with LCD TV panel and module sales reaching approximately 814,000 glass substrates in Q3, a 11.8% rise compared to the previous year.
In the service sector, TCL’s smart TV platform continued to shine. As of September 30, 2017, the number of activated users reached 21.175 million, up 38.23% from the same period in 2016. Daily active users exceeded 98.76 million, showing a 46.63% year-on-year increase. The game application user base stood at around 13.265 million, more than half of the total user base, with a 56.04% growth rate.
TCL has consistently focused on innovation and expansion. As a global home appliance leader, it faces intense competition both domestically and internationally—from traditional brands like Konka, Skyworth, and Changhong, as well as tech-driven companies like Xiaomi. Globally, it competes with giants such as Sony, Samsung, and Sharp. Despite these challenges, TCL has stayed ahead by refining quantum dot technology and integrating AI into its products.
In July 2017, TCL ranked 64th on the Fortune China Top 500 list, with a revenue of RMB 106.6 billion and a profit of RMB 1.6 billion (based on 2016 data). In the first half of 2017, revenue reached RMB 52.2 billion, with a net profit of RMB 1.66 billion—a 110.8% growth. At IFA 2017, TCL showcased its latest products, including the X6 XESS private cinema, C5 urban blues TV, and P6 ultra-thin TVs, with the X6 winning the "QD Technology Gold Award."
Internationally, TCL has expanded rapidly, with its products available in over 160 countries. More than half of its revenue comes from overseas markets. In Germany, brand awareness reached 70%, while in France, it ranked among the top three. In South America and Southeast Asia, TCL continues to gain traction. After decades of effort, TCL has become a globally recognized "Made in China" brand.
However, not all areas performed well. The mobile communication business struggled in Q3 2017, with sales of communication equipment dropping to 11.696 million units—a 32.97% decline year-on-year.
