Shenyang Machine Tool i5 R&D Team: Focus on future market innovation
On August 30, 2013, General Secretary Xi Jinping visited the Shenyang Machine Tool Group. Huang Yunying, then deputy general manager of the Shanghai Branch of the Shenyang Machine Tool Design and Research Institute, still recalls the moment when the leader asked the team about the origin of their R&D project. “Did this idea come from our own initiative or was it a directive from the company’s leadership?†he remembers the general secretary asking. For Huang, the question wasn’t just about the project itself—it was about whether the team was simply following orders or truly driving innovation.
At that time, Huang was only 32 years old and already leading a core R&D team focused on advanced machine tool technology. He reflected: “The question seemed challenging, but it also gave us a chance to speak up. We were not just doing tasks; we were thinking ahead, anticipating market needs and future trends. That’s what makes Shenyang Machine Tool unique.â€
Long before the rise of mobile internet, IoT, big data, and cloud computing, Shenyang Machine Tool had already recognized the importance of integrating information technology with manufacturing. In 2007, the company established a core R&D team in Shanghai to develop key components and CNC systems. Zhu Zhihao, a professor from Tongji University, and Huang Yunying, a graduate of the same university, became pivotal members of the team.
Their vision was bold. They believed that innovation wasn’t just about completing projects—it was about foreseeing the future. After years of hard work, their efforts paid off. When the general secretary visited four years later, the i5 smart system had just been successfully developed. “He was very pleased,†Huang said. “He emphasized that technology cannot rely on others. It must be self-developed, self-reliant, and self-improving. The future belongs to you, and you are the champions of your field.â€
Since then, the i5 series has continued to evolve. Products for two-axis, three-axis, four-axis, and five-axis machine tools have been launched one after another. The i5 intelligent system, which is autonomous, secure, and controllable, has become a cornerstone for the machine tool industry in the age of the industrial internet. In 2014, i5 smart machine tools capable of generating data during processing began to go global. This marked the beginning of a new era of innovation in the machine tool sector, with new business models emerging based on shared capabilities.
In 2015, Smart Cloud Co., Ltd. was founded, and the iSESOL Industrial Cloud Platform started its commercial journey. By April 2016, the world's first platform-based i5 five-axis machine tool, entirely developed in China, was officially launched. Known as the “variety of manhunters†in the industry, the iSESOL model of capacity sharing gradually matured. Today, the i5 technology holds 49 intellectual property rights, including 17 copyrights and 32 patents.
As the i5 technology continues to be industrialized and the iSESOL ecosystem expands, the team has grown from 120 people to over 700. Shenyang Machine Tool's relentless pursuit of innovation and self-reliance has shown strong and steady progress.
Huang Yunying emphasizes that innovation comes from the market, but it should also return to the market and serve society. “Expanding into more industries and areas to benefit from smart manufacturing and China’s own core technology should be the mission of i5,†he says.
This November, the Chinese-made motion control operating system i5OS will be officially released. This will allow the i5 motion control technology to support more equipment manufacturing industries, enabling more people to participate in developing i5OS applications. It will empower Chinese people to build value on their own core platform, creating opportunities for more companies and users.
Huang adds: “Similar to robotics and automation, industries that use motion control technology will have demand for this. It’s like building a smart manufacturing infrastructure through our innovation. When more social forces join, the value will be limitless.â€
On September 19 of this year, the Shanghai Branch of the Shenyang Machine Tool Design and Research Institute celebrated its 10th anniversary. Employees marked the occasion by writing messages on the wall. Huang wrote a circular message that read: “As long as I’m alive, I’ll continue working on i5. The i5 team will keep growing.â€
