Is the foldable iPhone coming soon?
Apple is reportedly collaborating with LG Display to develop a foldable iPhone, according to James Consulting. While Samsung currently leads in OLED technology and remains the sole supplier for Apple’s latest models like the iPhone X, Apple may be seeking alternatives to avoid potential risks of technology leakage. LG Display has formed a dedicated team to work on foldable OLED screens for the iPhone, and its subsidiary, LG Innotek, is also focusing on rigid flexible printed circuit boards (RFPCBs) to support the development.
Industry insiders suggest that LG could begin producing foldable OLED panels as early as 2020, which might push back Apple’s release schedule. Meanwhile, Samsung is expected to unveil its first foldable phone next year. This development highlights a shift in Apple's supply chain strategy, as it moves closer to LG Display, a long-time partner in LCD technology.
LG has already developed a prototype of a foldable OLED panel two to three years ago and has been working on improving its durability and yield. The company recently started mass production of mobile OLED screens at its E5 plant in Gumi, Gyeongsangbuk-do. These screens are being supplied to LG Electronics and some Chinese smartphone manufacturers. Production for iPhone OLED screens is expected to start as early as 2019 once the new E6 factory in Paju, Gyeonggi-do, is completed.
Apple is reportedly considering investing in the E6 factory to help boost LG's OLED production capacity. Although an agreement has been reached on the investment, specific details are still under discussion. This collaboration signals Apple’s growing reliance on LG as it explores new display technologies for future devices.
