Experiment Method:


1. Clean the instrument to ensure visibility and observe any changes in the sample during testing.


2. Heat and melt the asphalt sample, dehydrate it, and weigh it to match a volume of 0.4 cm³. Place it in a drying cylinder, heat it so that the asphalt is evenly coated on a metal sheet with a thickness of 0.5 mm. Allow the coated sheet to cool at room temperature for one hour.


3. Remove the rubber stopper and add a proper amount of solid carbon dioxide and ethanol mixture (or acetone) into the insulation tube.


4. Carefully remove the rubber stopper (which is fixed to the plug) and place the asphalt-coated steel sheet between the upper and lower chucks of the device.


5. Install the small rubber stopper and other components, then insert the thermometer into the top hole of the movable rod.


6. Adjust the cooling rate in the thermos to 1°C per minute by pumping.


7. When the temperature drops to about 10°C below the expected brittle point, start swinging the handle. The handle should make 5 revolutions, and the slider should move from the first step to the second, creating a 3.5 mm height difference. This causes the steel sheet to bend, and then return to its original position, straightening the sheet.


Repeat this process every time the temperature decreases by 1°C.


8. The temperature at which the test piece cracks is considered the brittle point of the asphalt sample.

Maintenance Instructions:


Avoid collisions during the experiment. Handle the equipment carefully. After testing, wipe the parts and store them in the instrument box to prevent damage or breakage of glass components.

Instrument Structure:


The instrument consists of a base, an insulating cylinder, a thermometer, a lower clamp, an upper clamp, a fixed rod, a guide rail, a slider, and a handle.


The base serves as the foundation and support for the entire device.


The insulating cylinder is a double-layer glass container used to hold a mixture of dry ice and ethanol, which helps maintain the required low temperature. The lower and upper clamps are used to secure the metal sheet during testing.


The fixed and movable rods are made of cloth bakelite, which prevents issues such as lubrication, corrosion, and temperature fluctuations that may affect performance.


The guide rails, sliders, and handles allow adjustment of the axial position of the rods, enabling the bending of the metal sheet. The curved glass tubes (long and short) are used for vacuuming and adding dry air as needed.
