Eaton’s new HART multiplexer provides total communication solutions for plant safety and monitoring
Eaton, a leading power management company, has launched a new line of MTL HART multiplexers designed to ensure seamless and reliable communication between field devices and plant control systems. These multiplexers are an essential part of Eaton's plant asset management strategy, incorporating predictive maintenance diagnostics that help reduce unplanned downtime and improve system reliability.
The series includes three multi-channel collectors: MTL4851, MTL4852, and MTL4854, all engineered to work with the latest HART standard process instruments. The MTL4851 and MTL4852 offer scalable Solutions with 16 to 256 channels per node, making them compact, easy to configure, and ideal for a wide range of applications. Their ability to automatically detect communication parameters eliminates the need for manual switches, while their scanning speed is up to three times faster than similar products, significantly reducing setup time and project risk.
When used together, the MTL4851 and MTL4852 provide access to device health and process data across approximately 8,000 connected devices. They can easily interface with Ethernet through ET-485 devices and offer the lowest single-channel cost in the MTL product line, making them a cost-effective choice for both new and existing systems.
The MTL4854, another key addition, features four HART modems supporting 32 channels, enabling simultaneous access to multiple devices. For instance, while one channel is used for partial stroke testing on a valve positioner, others can be monitored in real time. This parallel communication capability allows plant managers to continuously gather data and optimize processes efficiently.
Complementing the existing MTL4850 HART multiplexer, the MTL4854 is certified for use with SIL3-rated safety equipment, ensuring compliance with the highest industrial standards.
Andrew Ingrey, Technology Manager at Eaton’s Crouse-Hinds division, emphasized the benefits of the new multiplexers: “With the new multi-channel collector, we can more than triple performance to meet the needs of both retrofit and new projects. Our goal is to make installation easier and reduce downtime, helping customers achieve greater efficiency.â€
Eaton’s MTL HART Multiplexer is compatible with traditional I/O-based process control systems, supporting both new installations and upgrades. It is suitable for both intrinsically safe and standard applications. The modular and scalable design allows users to expand their systems as needed, using existing intrinsically safe backplanes or custom solutions.
Additionally, the MTL HART Multiplexer Device Type Manager (DTM) supports all FDT packages, with DTM files available for download from the MTL website. The latest AMS device management software also integrates seamlessly with these files.
As part of the Eaton Crouse-Hinds portfolio, MTL products deliver advanced instrumentation and protection for the process control industry. Key applications include intrinsic safety, fieldbus, surge protection, gas analysis, and alarm management. For more details, visit [Eaton’s official website](http://www.eaton.com).
