Determination of Ethyl Acetate Using Ultraviolet Spectrophotometry

Ethyl acetate (EA) is a colorless, transparent, and aromatic liquid with excellent solubility and fast evaporation. It is an important organic chemical raw material and widely used as an industrial solvent in the production of cellulose fibers, synthetic rubbers, paints, and resins. There are various methods for synthesizing EA, including traditional techniques like cooling reactions. However, these methods can be time-consuming and inefficient. To develop a more efficient and accurate method for determining ethyl acetate content, a rapid analytical approach using UV-visible spectrophotometry was proposed. The method involved a colorimetric reaction between ethyl acetate, hydroxylamine ethanol, and FeCl₃, forming a magenta complex. This complex exhibited maximum absorption at 530 nm. A dual-wavelength spectrophotometric technique was employed to establish a linear relationship between the absorbance difference at 530 nm and 800 nm and the concentration of ethyl acetate. This allowed for precise quantification of EA content. The procedure was found to be simple, fast, and effective when the FeCl₃/EA molar ratio was ≥1.1, the boiling water bath temperature was maintained at 100°C, and the reaction time was 40 seconds, with color development completed within 60 seconds. The accuracy of the method was validated using a ketone-hydrogen peroxide reaction system. The relative deviation was 1.79%, and the recovery rate ranged from 95.5% to 105.0%. This method offers a reliable and practical alternative for the rapid determination of ethyl acetate in industrial and analytical settings.
