Board Area Solution: Parallel Application of High Efficiency Step-Down Regulators
The power consumption of DC/DC converters is a critical concern for engineers in industrial and automotive applications, where high current demands must be met within limited space. Traditional solutions using high-performance discrete components offer efficiency but come with high costs and large board footprints, making them impractical. The LT8612 and LT8613 are highly integrated buck regulators that combine all essential components into a single IC, significantly reducing the size of the converter, even under high step-down ratios. These devices can also be paralleled to boost output current capacity and distribute both load and heat efficiently.
In addition to their compact design, these regulators feature ultra-low quiescent current, which helps extend battery life, and high switching frequencies that reduce the size of external components while avoiding noise-sensitive frequency bands. The LT8612 and LT8613 are 42V, 6A monolithic step-down regulators housed in a small 3mm x 6mm QFN package. Their internal high-efficiency power switch ensures minimal power loss, allowing the device to operate without overheating. For example, a typical 5V/30W LT8612 converter achieves excellent efficiency, even at a 24V input, with a temperature rise of no more than 50°C. At low loads, the regulators operate in low-ripple Burst Mode to maintain high efficiency.
With a minimum on-time as short as 40ns, the LT8612/LT8613 support high VIN/VOUT ratios and can operate at switching frequencies up to 2.2MHz. This high-frequency operation allows for smaller inductors and capacitors, while the device’s fast peak current mode architecture ensures optimal performance across various load conditions.
For applications requiring higher current, such as in automotive or industrial systems, the multiphase design of the LT8613 enhances output capability. It includes an integrated rail-to-rail current sense amplifier, along with monitor and control pins for accurate average current regulation. This enables precise current sharing between multiple LT8613 modules without additional control circuitry.
Figure 3 illustrates three LT8613s connected in parallel to deliver up to 16A at 4V. One serves as the main regulator, while the others act as slaves, slightly adjusting their output voltages to ensure balanced current distribution. A synchronized three-phase clock signal from the LTC6909 oscillator ensures proper phase alignment. Thermal images show that the three LT8613s operate at similar temperatures, confirming balanced current sharing. Efficiency measurements further validate the system's performance.
To fine-tune current sharing, simply adjust the sense resistor values across the ISP and ISN pins. This flexibility makes the LT8612 and LT8613 ideal for demanding applications where space, efficiency, and reliability are crucial.
