A sensor is a device that detects physical or environmental information and converts it into an electrical signal or another form of data according to specific rules. This process enables the transmission, processing, storage, display, and recording of information, playing a crucial role in automation and control systems. As the first step in automatic detection and control, sensors come in various types based on different classification criteria.

Sensors can be categorized in multiple ways:

  1. By the measured physical quantity: For example, force sensors, pressure sensors, displacement sensors, temperature sensors, and angle sensors.
  2. By working principle: Such as strain sensors, piezoelectric sensors, piezoresistive sensors, inductive sensors, capacitive sensors, and photoelectric sensors.
  3. By energy conversion method:
    • Energy conversion type: These sensors convert non-electrical energy into electrical signals, like piezoelectric, thermocouple, and photovoltaic sensors.
    • Energy control type: These do not convert energy but change the measured quantity into an electrical parameter, such as resistive, inductive, Hall-effect, thermistor, photoresistor, and humidity-sensitive resistors.
  4. By working mechanism:
    • Structural type: Examples include inductive and capacitive sensors.
    • Physical property type: Such as piezoelectric, photoelectric, and various semiconductor-based sensors.
  5. By output signal form:
    • Analog sensors: Output analog voltage signals.
    • Digital sensors: Output digital signals, such as encoder sensors.
  6. By energy conversion principle:
    • Active sensors: These generate their own electrical signals from non-electrical inputs, such as electromotive force or charge sensors.
    • Passive sensors: These do not generate power but modify the measured quantity into an electrical parameter, such as resistive, inductive, and capacitive sensors.

Sensors are essential in modern technology, enabling precise monitoring and control across industries ranging from healthcare to automotive and industrial automation. Understanding the different types helps in selecting the right sensor for specific applications, ensuring accuracy and efficiency in data collection and system performance.
