Development of passenger drone/electric vehicle hybrid vehicle
On March 7th, Beijing time, according to foreign media reports, as electric vehicle battery technology continues to advance, some car manufacturers are exploring the integration of electric vehicle batteries and autonomous technology with drones. This innovation aims to introduce manned electric drones, which could help ease traffic congestion in megacities.
According to the report, Audi, in collaboration with Airbus and the renowned Italian design firm Italdesign, is developing a concept for a drone/electric vehicle hybrid that can switch automatically between road and air travel. The system allows users to choose the fastest and most efficient route, whether on the ground or in the sky. Airbus and Audi believe that by 2030, urban traffic congestion will worsen globally, prompting the need for sustainable, modular transportation solutions. This includes multi-mode systems that integrate cars and drones to enhance mobility and reduce environmental impact.
The concept vehicle is envisioned as an unmanned electric aircraft that can be attached to an electric car, transforming it into a small flying vehicle. Users can plan their trips via a mobile app, with the system suggesting optimal routes based on factors like traffic, time, cost, and user preferences. Once the user arrives at their destination, the vehicle automatically separates into its ground and flight modules. The ground module continues driving, while the flight module returns to a charging station for future use.
Airbus has been researching electric flight systems, including an autonomous VTOL (vertical takeoff and landing) aircraft. To better integrate this with electric vehicles, Airbus partnered with Audi and Italdesign to develop a drone/car that seamlessly combines flight and ground systems. Their design platform is built on three key elements: Audi’s AI-based traffic interaction system, Airbus’s VTOL flight module, and a future-oriented VR experience platform. These components work together to ensure a smooth and efficient user experience.
Bernd Martens, Audi’s purchasing director and president of Italdesign, stated, “Diverse transportation needs and new concepts in cities are driving our innovation. Italdesign is a hub for radical ideas and prototypes. Through teamwork, we aim to realize a vision that could reshape urban life forever.â€
This hybrid vehicle is an evolution of the 2017 Geneva Motor Show concept “Pop.Up,†now called “Pop.Up NEXT.†It retains the two-seater design but removes traditional controls, replacing them with a large display. The capsule-shaped cabin, made from carbon fiber, measures 2.6 meters long, 1.4 meters high, and 1.5 meters wide. The flight system remains independent, featuring eight counter-rotating propellers powered by batteries for vertical takeoff and flight. The design highlights Audi’s brand identity and may influence future automotive aesthetics.
