The rise of the original, the video site is difficult to "back on the IP good ride"

In recent years, major online platforms have entered a mature phase in their investment in original domestic dramas. Platforms like Youku and iQiyi are no longer solely focused on big-name actors, popular celebrities, or so-called "best-selling" storylines when selecting content. Despite this shift, they continue to capture the hearts of audiences. In contrast, the collaboration between Tencent and TVB on *Actors 2* has sparked some questions about its direction and quality. The current drama landscape is highly competitive, and even successful series face challenges in maintaining their momentum. While it might be an overstatement to call this year a "golden age" for Chinese dramas, there's no denying that by September, the market has seen a wave of high-quality productions. From the early hits like *Ghost Blowing Lights to the Ancient City*, to *Uncensored Crime*, *The Night’s Chase*, and the Hong Kong-style *Anti-Black* and *Apostles II*, these dramas not only attracted massive viewership but also earned strong word-of-mouth praise. For instance, *White Night* received nearly 50,000 reviews with a rating of 9.1, a score that rivals classics like *Daqin Empire* and *The Great Qing Dynasty 1566*. It's safe to say that such a performance can be considered a miracle in today’s crowded market. Recently, three highly anticipated dramas—*Uncensored Crime*, *White Night Pursuit*, and *Apostles II*—were released simultaneously across iQiyi, Youku, and Tencent. The first two suspenseful series received widespread acclaim, while *Apostles II* faced higher expectations due to the success of its predecessor. However, the sequel struggled to meet those expectations. The original *Actors 2* was a 2014 Hong Kong production by TVB, starring Lin Feng and Charmaine Hua. It was a huge hit, achieving the highest ratings of the year and winning the Best Drama award. It was also very popular in mainland China, where it achieved millions of views at a time when many shows struggled to gain traction. In the current decline of TVB, this was a rare phenomenon. Even supporting actor Xu Shaoxiong became a fan favorite for his role as “Happy Brother.” With such a strong foundation, the decision to produce a sequel seemed natural. However, when the sequel was announced, the original leads had already left the project. As a result, Tencent rebranded the show into a prequel, which significantly affected the audience's perception. The new version didn't reach the 8.1 rating of the first season, currently standing at 7.7. While still relatively high compared to other recent dramas, it fell short of expectations in this year’s competitive lineup, making it more of a “net drama” than a top-tier production. This year’s surge in high-quality web dramas reflects the maturation of self-produced content by major platforms. Youku and iQiyi have shifted away from chasing celebrity names and hot IPs, instead focusing on original stories and strong storytelling. *Uncensored Crime* is based on an original novel with a well-known author in the suspense genre, while *White Night* is entirely an original script. These shows prove that quality content can thrive without relying on mainstream popularity. On the other hand, the collaboration between Tencent and TVB raised some doubts. TVB dramas have a distinct Hong Kong flavor, and it remains to be seen whether Tencent can accurately capture and maintain that unique style. While TVB is just one of several partners in Tencent’s video collaborations, the company still holds onto a number of popular IP rights, including the *Ghost Blowing Lamps* series, which could generate significant revenue for years. However, not all IP-driven projects succeed. For example, *Ghost Blowing Lights: Makino* was criticized as a fake and failed to gain traction. This highlights the importance of quality over just branding. iQiyi’s *Crime Without License* not only showcased the chaos in the IP market but also emphasized the value of original, high-quality content. If platforms like iQiyi and Youku continue to invest in such dramas, Tencent may find it harder to maintain its dominance.
