The rise of the original, the video site is difficult to "back on the IP good ride"

The major streaming platforms have entered a mature phase in their investment in original Chinese dramas. Youku and iQiyi are no longer chasing big-name actors, traffic stars, or so-called "best-selling" storylines when selecting themes and talent. Yet, they continue to win the audience’s favor. In contrast, the collaboration between Tencent and TVB on *Actors 2* has raised some questions among viewers. Intense competition makes it hard for *Actors 2* to stand out. While it might be an overstatement to call this year's Chinese drama scene a "golden age," there's no doubt that by September, the market had already seen a number of high-quality productions. From the start of the year, shows like *Ghost Blowing Lights to the Ancient City*, *Uncensored Crime*, and *The Night’s Chase* have captured large audiences. Alongside them, *Anti-Black* and *Apostles II*, which carry strong Hong Kong film aesthetics, also received great reviews. For instance, *White Night* has nearly 50,000 user reviews with a score of 9.1, a figure that rivals classics like *Daqin Empire* and *The Great Qing Empire*. This is nothing short of a miracle in today’s crowded drama landscape. Recently, three popular dramas—*Uncensored Crime*, *White Night Pursuit*, and *Apostles II*—were released simultaneously across three major platforms: iQiyi, Youku, and Tencent. The first two suspense series have maintained a solid reputation. However, expectations for *Apostles II* were high due to the success of its predecessor. Unfortunately, the sequel didn’t quite meet those expectations. The first season of *Apostles* was a genuine Hong Kong production by TVB, starring Lin Feng and Charmaine Hua. It was the highest-rated drama of the year and won the Best Drama award. It was also very popular on the mainland, achieving ratings in the hundreds of millions at a time when hit rates were low. In the current decline of TVB, this was a rare phenomenon. Even the supporting actor Xu Shaoxiong became a fan favorite as the "happy brother." With such a successful legacy, producing a sequel was a natural move. But when the sequel was announced, Lin Feng and Charmaine had already moved on. As a result, Tencent turned the project into a prequel, without the original leads. The absence of the main cast affected the audience’s perception, and the rating dropped from 8.1 to 7.7. While 7.7 is still high compared to other recent dramas, it didn't make it into the top tier this year. In fact, it felt more like a "net drama" in comparison to the current wave of hits. High-quality online dramas are helping platforms refine their original content strategies. Why have so many new dramas emerged this year? Mainly because the leading video platforms have reached a mature stage in investing in homemade content. Youku and iQiyi no longer focus solely on big names or popular IP. *Uncensored Crime*, for example, is based on an original novel with a well-known author in the suspense genre. *White Night* is even an original script. Despite lacking a "flowing niche," both have been well-received. On the other hand, the collaboration between Tencent and TVB has sparked doubts. TVB dramas are known for their unique Hong Kong flavor. Can Tencent accurately capture that essence? Time will tell. Meanwhile, TVB is just one of the copyright holders involved in Tencent's projects. How the two companies collaborate remains unclear. Other platforms are moving away from hot IPs and focusing on original content, but Tencent still holds onto a lot of popular IPs. The profits from the *Ghost Blowing Lamps* series alone could last years. But what does that really mean? There’s also a lesson to be learned from *Ghost Blowing Lights of Makino*, which was once highly anticipated by iQiyi but ended up being criticized as a "fake ghost blow" with poor ratings. This is not necessarily bad—it highlights the importance of quality over hype. This year, iQiyi's *Crime Without License* showed that the scramble for IP is becoming chaotic, and only high-quality content can truly stand out. If iQiyi and Youku continue to produce network dramas with the same energy as these suspense hits, Tencent may not remain so calm in the long run.
