The main five countries (Germany, France, Britain, Italy, Spain) have about 130 million TV home users, plus the total TV family across Russia, Eastern Europe, and Eurasia. The number of users reached 323 million. As of the end of 2008, a total of approximately 39 million users in Europe have switched to digital TV. Europe's terrestrial and satellite radio and television development is better, accounting for more than 70% of the share, while cable TV has a small share, which is the opposite of China. In India, the population is second only to China's big country, and it has already started the conversion from analog to digital. The total number of TV home users is about 360 million, and more than 60% are satellite and terrestrial broadcast TV users.

In early digital TV systems, video coding was dominated by MPEG-2 format, but with the introduction of the H.264 coding standard, better performance and lower bandwidth resources make it the first choice for TV network operators' video coding formats. In particular, in terrestrial and satellite broadcast television systems where bandwidth resources are very tight, the H.264 video format will gradually replace MPEG-2. It is conservatively estimated that in the next five years, the H.264 video format will reach 70% to 80% of the total market.

In order to provide customers with solutions for such a market, Fujitsu has introduced a cost-effective MPEG2/H.264 multi-decoder chip - MB86H01, which is compatible with both MPEG-2 and H.264 video decoding formats, helping users to apply early. A digital television system based on the MPEG-2 encoding format and smoothly switched to a system of the H.264 encoding format.

To date, Fujitsu's MPEG-2 decoder chip, the "SmartMPEG" series, has been used in standard definition digital TV broadcasting and supports the DVB standard. Especially in Europe, the SmartMPEG series is widely used in TVs, set-top boxes and portable TV receivers.

Fujitsu applied this successful experience to the MPEG-2/H.264 multi-decoder chip solution and used the H.264 decoder technology with independent intellectual property rights to significantly reduce the power consumption of the H.264 decoder. Applications (fixed, portable) are available in PBGA-256 and small FBGA-240 feet. This family of small chip packages is ideal for use in stationary applications and portable devices such as personal navigation devices (PNDs) with built-in TV receivers.

This multi-channel decoder chip supports the necessary functional characteristics of televisions and set-top boxes for standard-definition digital broadcasting, and is composed of two (dual) MPEG-2 decoders and one H.264 decoder. The dual MPEG-2 decoder processes two video streams simultaneously and can be used in digital video recorders (DVRs) with dual tuners, and can also use the picture-in-picture function to view two programs simultaneously. Using H.264 decoder technology with proprietary intellectual property rights, the power consumption of H.264 decoders can be reduced to a lower level. It is equipped with a small package -10mm × 10mm (FBGA 240 feet), which can be used for small devices such as personal navigation devices (PNDs) with built-in TV receivers. The decoder also integrates the high-speed USB 2.0 High Speed ​​OTG controller, which greatly improves connectivity to external devices such as digital cameras.
With high recognition of technologies and products in image and video processing, Fujitsu will focus on video processing-specific chip products (ASSP) and continue to strengthen its launch on TV and set-top box video processing ASSP products.

The product includes a dual MPEG-2 decoder and H.264 decoder product developed for the European, Russian, and Asian broadcast digital TV markets. The dual-MPEG-2 decoder and H.264 decoder supporting SD are integrated to handle not only Europe. MPEG-2 standard definition broadcasts (especially in Western Europe) can also support the standard definition broadcast H.264 format that will emerge in India, Eastern Europe and Russia, as well as interactive H.264 VoD services.

With a dual MPEG-2 decoder, this series of chips is suitable for DVRs with dual tuners; viewers can use the picture-in-picture function to view two programs simultaneously. (In the H.264 decoder mode, the picture-in-picture function is not supported)

This series of chips integrates a 202.5MHz ARCTM Tangent-A4 CPU on a single chip, and supports the necessary audio and video decoding functions and screen display functions for receiving digital broadcasts, making it easy for customers to develop a wide range of applications.

Small package for portable devices

The low power consumption of the decoder is realized by using H.264 decoder technology with independent intellectual property rights. Available in a 27mm x 27mm package (PBGA-256 feet) and a small 10mm x 10mm package (FBGA-240 feet), these products are ideal for portable devices such as personal navigation devices (PNDs) with built-in TV receivers.

Development Environment Fujitsu provides customers with a set-top box reference design "photograph" (photo) for this product. Because the reference design has a rich interface, it is easy for customers to expand and change functions in a short time according to their needs, thus reducing costs.
This reference design not only decodes audio and video (MPEG-2 and H.264) of European standard definition broadcast, but also enables TV menu display/teletext display/subtitle display function through OSD function.
