Huawei: Will challenge dominance through AI

Huawei's performance in Taiwan still lags behind its global market presence. According to Bohai, Huawei's general agent in the region, the company is focusing on strengthening localization and brand revitalization this year. Music and photography remain two key pillars of Huawei's marketing strategy in Taiwan. While Apple has dominated the smartphone market for over a decade, Huawei is leveraging AI technology to challenge that dominance. As the first brand to integrate AI chips into smartphones, Huawei aims to lead the next wave of innovation in the mobile industry. In December last year, Huawei achieved a 2.7% market share in Taiwan’s smartphone sales, marking the highest level since 2012. However, this still pales in comparison to its global market share of over 10%, indicating that growth in Taiwan remains relatively slow. Bohai emphasized that the company will continue to prioritize local branding and community engagement. This year, Huawei plans to support youth musicians and campus activities for the first time through corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives. Additionally, the company has launched an official fan club and is set to introduce more wearable and smart devices. In April, Huawei will open its first brand experience store in Sanchuang, further enhancing its consumer presence. The company also highlighted that the smartphone industry undergoes major shifts every ten years. Apple held the top position for a decade, but the current turning point lies in artificial intelligence. The high-end Mate 10 model, launched late last year, features the Haisi chipset with a deep neural network accelerator, marking Huawei’s transformation from a smartphone manufacturer to an AI-powered device leader. However, as 5G technology approaches, challenges remain. The upcoming 5G chipsets need to support both millimeter-wave and 6GHz bands. Although HiSilicon is experienced in handling frequencies below 6GHz, it lacks expertise in millimeter-wave technology, leading to antenna design challenges. Some market analysts believe that HiSilicon's 5G chipset may lag behind Qualcomm by about a year. Bohai noted that commercial 5G networks are expected to expand significantly in 2020. Huawei aims to have its 5G smartphones ready by then. Given that the company has always used HiSilicon chips for high-end models, it is likely that these will be the preferred choice for 5G devices. With over 40 antennas, developing 5G smartphones without interference is a complex task. On the product front, Huawei unveiled several new devices, including the ultra-thin MateBook X notebook, the M3 Lite tablet focused on audio and video performance, the Band 2 Pro smart bracelet with continuous heart rate monitoring and GPS, and the TalkBand B3 Lite, which combines Bluetooth and fitness functions.
