Intelligent video and millimeter wave radar multi-mode fusion technology

In recent years, studies have shown that the majority of traffic accidents occur because drivers fail to detect obstacles while driving. To address this issue, an in-vehicle intelligent alarm system could automatically alert drivers and even activate braking functions when a vehicle approaches an obstacle, significantly enhancing road safety. Dr. Zhao Shengjie, a leading expert under China's first batch of "Thousand Talents Program" and a pioneer from Ning, along with his team, is currently developing a multi-mode fusion technology that combines intelligent video and millimeter-wave radar. This innovation aims to bring the concept of a "vehicle obstacle alarm system" into reality. The system can detect obstructions up to 200 meters ahead, which is far beyond the reach of traditional ultrasonic reversing radars. At the 1865 Creative Industry Park in Qinhuai District, reporters witnessed Zhao Shengjie testing a large commercial vehicle equipped with radar sensors placed at six key points—four on the rear and two on the front—creating a comprehensive "obstacle alarm system." This setup helps prevent low-speed collisions and parking incidents. Zhao explained that current reversing radars use ultrasonic technology, which works well at slow speeds with a 10-meter range. However, during normal driving, where speeds are higher, detecting obstacles more than 100 meters ahead becomes crucial to avoid serious accidents. That’s where advanced millimeter-wave radar comes in, capable of identifying obstacles within a range of 60 to 200 meters. To improve accuracy, Zhao’s team is also integrating intelligent video technology. By combining radar and video data, the system can better perceive and recognize obstacles, enhancing its ability to monitor, classify, and respond to potential dangers. This dual approach allows the car to take appropriate actions, such as slowing down, accelerating, or parking, based on real-time information. Looking ahead, Zhao Shengjie founded Youbi Intelligent Technology Co., Ltd. in Qinhuai District earlier this year, leading a team of returning experts to develop and commercialize this technology. He shared that the company plans to launch related products over the next few years, starting with security devices based on intelligent video. Within three years, they aim to introduce mature products under their own brand, capturing around 10% of the domestic market and eventually expanding internationally. Zhao is confident about the future of these products, citing strong market demand. According to his research, the automobile industry has seen an average annual growth of over 20% in the past three years, while the automotive electronics sector has grown by as much as 40%. Consumers increasingly prioritize vehicle safety over performance or entertainment features. Additionally, several countries in Europe and the U.S. have already implemented or are working on regulations requiring the installation of similar obstacle detection systems. In the U.S., the number of vehicles equipped with such systems increased by over 65% between 2006 and 2011. Zhao added that once their products hit the market, they will offer superior cost-performance compared to imported alternatives, giving them a competitive edge in both domestic and international markets.
