GDC 2018: Apex Construct Demonstrates Gear VR's Inside-Out Tracking Technology

Apex Construct, the original VR game, didn't support mobile VR experiences. However, at this year's GDC, developers Fast Travel and semiconductor giant ARM made the impossible possible by showcasing a mobile version of the game. This collaboration is a big step forward for mobile VR, proving that high-quality VR can be delivered on smartphones with the right technology.

Fast Travel has partnered with ARM to bring Apex Construct to the Samsung Galaxy S8 via the Gear VR headset. While this version is currently just a demo, it shows great potential. The company hasn’t announced plans to release Apex Construct on mobile platforms yet, but this prototype gives a glimpse into what could be possible in the future. Comparing the visuals of the mobile version with the PS4 edition reveals that the quality is surprisingly close, highlighting the impressive optimization done by the team.

What makes this demo even more interesting is the use of inside-out tracking, a feature typically found in more advanced VR systems. Although the Gear VR doesn’t natively support 6DOF (six degrees of freedom), the upcoming Galaxy S9 and Qualcomm’s platform updates may change that. This prototype suggests that while full interaction isn’t available yet, the foundation is being laid for a more immersive experience in the future.

If you're interested in learning more about how Fast Travel and ARM are pushing the boundaries of mobile VR, you can attend their session on March 21st. The talk, titled “Using Apex Construct to Realize a Closer Host Platform Experience on Mobile Platforms,” will offer insights into developing for mobile VR and tips for maximizing performance and immersion.

In addition to the mobile demo, Fast Travel will also release versions of Apex Construct for Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and Microsoft Mixed Reality on March 20th. This multi-platform rollout shows the growing importance of VR across different ecosystems, and it's exciting to see how Apex Construct is adapting to meet the needs of various users.
