Following the trend, the mobile open source framework NativeScript will support AR

As augmented reality (AR) continues to gain momentum in the mobile development space, more companies are stepping into this exciting field. Progress, known for its open-source cross-platform framework NativeScript, is now among the pioneers exploring AR integration. This move highlights the growing importance of AR in modern app development.

Augmented reality enhances real-world environments by overlaying digital elements such as images, sounds, and animations. The global success of Pokémon GO in 2016 played a significant role in popularizing AR, making it a must-have feature for many developers today.

Major players in the mobile industry, including Google and Apple, have already introduced their own AR development kits—ARKit for iOS and ARCore for Android. Now, Progress is taking steps to bring AR support to NativeScript, aiming to make it available on both Android and iOS platforms.

Todd Anglin, Progress’s Chief Evangelist, shared details about the upcoming AR features through blog posts and videos. While the full implementation isn’t ready yet, he mentioned that the team is actively working on plugins that will be compatible with Angular and vanilla JavaScript-based NativeScript apps. “We’re excited about the potential and hope to release these plugins soon,” he said.

Rob Lauer, a developer and contributor, provided a preview of the Nativescript-ar plugin. Currently, it uses Apple’s ARKit API, but it's also designed to support the upcoming Google ARCore API. Although ARCore has faced some delays due to Android platform challenges, the plugin is being built with cross-platform compatibility in mind.

Lauer explained, “The first version of Nativescript-ar will focus on ARKit since ARCore is still delayed. However, we're keeping the overall architecture flexible so that when ARCore becomes available, it can be easily integrated. Both ARKit and ARCore offer similar functionalities, which makes cross-platform development more straightforward.”

This development marks an important step forward for NativeScript, giving developers more tools to create immersive AR experiences across multiple platforms. As AR continues to evolve, the ability to build once and deploy everywhere will become even more valuable for app creators.
