When Apple and Sharp start negotiations, the iPhone finally needs to use the OLED screen.

Before the official release, there have been various rumors that the iPhone 7 will use an OLED screen, but it has not been proven. Apple still uses the LCD screen on the iPhone 7, and has raised the parameters such as color gamut, brightness and contrast of the LCD to an unprecedented new height. However, the rumors about OLED did not seem to end there.

Recently, 9to5mac, a US science and technology blog, reported that the current evidence shows that Apple is likely to formally adopt an OLED screen on the iPhone 8 launched next year.

This Friday, Bloomberg also reported that Apple is currently in talks with Sharp on the production of OLED panels for their handsets, and that if Sharp can ensure sufficient capacity, this negotiation will become a reality.

Prior to this, Sharp had announced that it would invest more than US$500 million in the OLED display manufacturing industry, but the return on production brought by this investment will not be realized until the end of 2018. However, in general, Apple usually chooses to contract with a number of suppliers in order to reduce risk and reduce supply prices. Therefore, Sharp may be just one of its options.

For now, Apple's only product that uses OLED technology is the Apple Watch smart watch. Compared with LCD technology, OLED technology can provide higher contrast, while also superior to traditional LCD technology in terms of power consumption, color gamut, screen thickness, and flexible technology. In addition, when the black interface is displayed, the OLED display panel itself does not emit light, so it is also very convenient to achieve the full-screen partial display effect. Therefore, Apple will use OLED technology in the future iPhone is almost an inevitable trend.

Samsung, Apple’s biggest competitor, used OLED display technology for its Galaxy series phones many years ago, but Apple has not adopted this more advanced display technology due to supply constraints.
