1. Introduction

Direct Broadcast Satellite (DBS) represents a crucial component of China's innovative industrial framework. It focuses on the most recent advancements in satellite communication technologies, microelectronics, computer science, and other key areas, significantly expanding the reach of China’s radio and television services. This initiative enhances the broadcasting service capabilities while promoting improvements in satellite design and manufacturing techniques, program transmission methods, and secure broadcasting protocols. It also encourages the growth of related product manufacturing and service industries, leading to industrial upgrades. Expected to generate a market size in the hundreds of billions, it plays a pivotal role in driving GDP growth. Currently, there is a significant demand for live broadcast satellites within China. Hangzhou Guoxin has received approval from the State Administration of Radio, Film, and Television to develop ABS-S demodulation chips. To streamline the development process for manufacturers and reduce the bill of materials (BoM) for end products, they launched GX1121 (an ABS-S solution) and GX3001 (an MPEG2 decoder chip). 2. Overview of ABS-S Set-Top Box Functions

The GX1121 + GX3001 solution-based ABS-S set-top box is a digital satellite receiver that adheres to the software functionality and hardware specifications of China's Broadcasting and Television Broadcasting Satellite “Village Communication” program. This receiver demodulates signals according to the China Advanced Broadcasting System (ABS-S) standards. The solution offers dual video outputs, an S-VIDEO output, and a stereo audio channel, catering to diverse user preferences. Below are additional features of the set-top box solution:

3. Design of DVB-C Set-Top Boxes Based on GX1121 and GX3001

3.1 System Hardware Design

The following primarily outlines the design of our solution regarding the system channels and sources. Figure 1 below is a block diagram of the system application for our solution:

Description of Each Module:

PSI/SI Engine: In the application software, program searches and Electronic Program Guide (EPG) information require detailed data from each table in PSI and SI. Additionally, certain data in the tables need to be acquired or monitored in real-time by software, necessitating a structured approach for filtering and parsing these tables. The PSI/SI engine efficiently monitors, filters, and analyzes PSI/SI tables, enhancing the real-time functionality of software applications and improving the readability of the code.

UI System: Develops a set-top box interface platform, offering a wide array of controls and advanced features to boost interface development efficiency.

NODE: Manages set-top box data storage, minimizing fragmentation in flash memory, ensuring efficient data storage and rapid retrieval.

Search: Constructs a receiving mechanism for relevant tables based on the PSI/SI engine to complete program searches, sort, and save data for the set-top box. Program searches include single-frequency and automatic searches.

EPG: Establishes a receiving mechanism for related tables based on the PSI/SI engine. When demultiplexing does not filter EPG data, the EPG module remains in a sleep state. Upon detecting data, the EPG module can quickly parse and update stored data in real-time without wasting system resources.

Book: Implements the reserved program feature, automatically switching to the user’s reserved program at the appointed time.

Time: Provides two functionalities: system time for the set-top box and a timer function for the aforementioned applications and modules at the same level.

AV: Focuses on audio and video operations, including program playback, channel settings, volume adjustments, TV broadcast system settings, etc.

Dbase: Calls NODE to store, read, delete, modify, and add data for the set-top box.

Information Service: Filters, organizes, parses XML data, and processes interface menus for information service data.

4. Conclusion

Currently, many STB manufacturers in China have adopted the GX1121 + GX3001 solution to pass the live broadcast star certification tests of Radio and TV. The overall performance of the program and the company's close customer service have earned unanimous recognition from domestic STB manufacturers.

Due to increasingly fierce market competition, STB manufacturers feel mounting pressure to bring products to market faster, demanding more comprehensive and efficient technical support from chip suppliers. Thus, the level of technical support provided by chip suppliers has become a critical consideration for STB manufacturers. In the past, foreign chip manufacturers often relied on domestic agents for technical support, but this model struggles to meet the dual demands of complete machine manufacturers for differentiated designs and faster time-to-market.
