Guangdong Promotes Opening of 4K Channel: Plans to Establish 4K, 8K TV and Film Program "Double Center"
In a significant move to advance the development of 4K ultra-high-definition television, the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television has signed a memorandum with the Guangdong Provincial People's Government. This agreement aims to position Guangdong as a leading pilot province in the nationwide application and industrial development of 4K technology. The initiative emphasizes the integration of 4K TV applications with media innovation, aiming to drive technological progress and economic growth.
Under the memorandum, the administration will support Guangdong Radio and Television to transition its existing channels into 4K broadcasts, enhancing the quality and variety of content available to viewers. Additionally, the province is set to develop a program content copyright trading platform and expand the media big data industry, further strengthening its position in the sector.
One of the key goals is the establishment of a "Double Center" for 4K and 8K TV and movie programs, which will serve as a hub for content creation, production, and distribution. This initiative is expected to not only enrich the local market but also provide high-quality content to the national audience. The collaboration between state agencies, broadcasters, and private enterprises highlights the comprehensive approach being taken to build a robust 4K ecosystem.
Guangdong has already made notable progress, with nearly 5.642 million 4K TV users as of June this year. The province is actively working on expanding its 4K content library, offering over 1,362 hours of 4K programming through cable TV, IPTV test channels, and on-demand zones. The Guangdong Southern New Media 4K Eco-Industry Alliance, launched in July, is playing a crucial role in fostering collaboration among stakeholders to create a sustainable and innovative content ecosystem.
Looking ahead, the 4K industry in Guangdong is expected to generate an output value exceeding 600 billion yuan by 2020. This growth is anticipated to be driven by increased investment in infrastructure, content production, and digital services. The government and industry leaders are optimistic that the cooperation outlined in the memorandum will accelerate the adoption of 4K technology across the country.
To support this vision, the province is also focusing on improving network transmission capabilities, enhancing program source supply, and developing new digital home applications. These efforts aim to address current challenges such as insufficient content supply and ensure a seamless user experience.
With the establishment of the 4K experimental channel and the deployment of advanced cloud-based services, Guangdong is positioning itself as a model for the future of high-definition television. As the industry continues to evolve, the province’s strategic initiatives are setting a strong foundation for long-term success in the 4K market.
