Apple is looking to break Samsung's OLED dominance.
BOE is currently constructing a new OLED facility in Mianyang, Sichuan, which is expected to start operations in 2019. This plant is rumored to supply OLED panels for the iPhone. According to industry sources, Apple has been evaluating BOE’s technology and may first adopt it for the Apple Watch before expanding to the iPhone lineup.
Currently, all OLED panels for the iPhone are supplied by Samsung Electronics. To reduce dependency, Apple has been reaching out to BOE, LGD, and Japan Display, sharing its technology with these companies to diversify the supply chain.
The iPhone X uses only Samsung-supplied OLED screens.
Can BOE’s OLED technology keep up with industry leader Samsung? A foreign OLED expert working at a Chinese factory claims that BOE’s B7 line is now on par with Samsung’s. However, Professor Zhang Baizhe from Tsinghua University, an expert in liquid crystal display technology, argues that while China has invested heavily, OLED development remains highly complex. Samsung has been focused on this field for over a decade and spent several years improving yield rates. Chinese manufacturers must be fully prepared for the long-term challenges ahead.
