Apple is looking to break Samsung’s OLED dominance.
BOE recently announced plans to build a new OLED facility in Mianyang, Sichuan, which is expected to start production in 2019. This plant is reportedly aimed at supplying OLED panels for the iPhone. According to industry sources, Apple is currently evaluating BOE’s technology and may first integrate it into the Apple Watch before expanding its use to iPhones.
Currently, all OLED panels for the iPhone are sourced from Samsung Electronics. To reduce dependency on a single supplier, Apple has been actively reaching out to BOE, LG Display, and Japan Display, sharing technology with these manufacturers to diversify its supply chain.
The iPhone X’s OLED screens are entirely supplied by Samsung.
The question remains: can BOE’s OLED technology catch up with Samsung, the market leader? A foreign OLED expert working at a Chinese factory claims that BOE’s B7 technology is now comparable to Samsung’s. However, Professor Zhang Baizhe from Tsinghua University, an expert in liquid crystal displays, argues that while Chinese manufacturers have invested heavily, OLED technology is more complex. Samsung has been developing OLED for over a decade, spending several years refining yield rates. Chinese companies must be fully prepared for the long-term challenges ahead.

It has been reported that BOE's Sichuan B7 plant is set to begin mass production of OLED panels for smartphones at the end of this month. During the National Day holiday, engineers will remain on-site to ensure continuous operations. The company is hoping to significantly boost shipments by the end of October.
