Nowadays, TV viewers are more and more fond of quickly and easily watching their favorite programs through Personal Video Recording (PVR) technology. Soon, consumers will extend this experience, similar to video-on-demand in the living room, to PVR-enabled mobile devices, thanks to technology from Texas Instruments. TI presented advanced mobile DTV solutions with partners such as PacketVideo, Silicon & Software Systems Ltd. (S3) at the International Broadcasting Conference (IBC) in the Netherlands from September 7th to 12th. The TI HollywoodTM DVB-H single-chip and OMAPTM2 platform demonstration will use PacketVideo's pvTVTM technology to deliver the industry's first mobile PVR and picture-in-picture (PIP) capabilities on real-time DVB-H networks.

The new mobile PVR and PIP solutions enable consumers to enjoy the most interesting programs without having to receive real-time broadcasts of fixed program content, which helps to further promote mobile DTV content. The use of early mobile DTV shows that consumers can watch mobile TV content for up to three hours a day. These three hours are usually divided into two short viewing periods of 2 to 10 minutes. It is expected that the morning and evening commute, lunch break and evening hours will be the main viewing time for mobile DTV users. The new features will provide greater flexibility, allowing consumers to see favorite shows during the viewing period without being subject to the playback schedule at the time. The DVB-H mobile DTV network provides the necessary spectrum efficiency and flexibility for consumers who are eager for more content.

Marc Cetto, General Manager of TI's Mobile Connectivity Solutions business unit, said: "Consumers are fascinated by personalized content, and personal video recording has grown rapidly. TI is actively working with partners such as PacketVideo and S3 to provide mobile phones. "PVR and PIP play an important role in consumer electronics. These advanced features will enable users to enjoy personalized content on the go, anytime, anywhere."

With the Hollywood chip (DTV1000) and OMAP processor-based solutions, consumers can receive real-time TV shows and store content on mobile devices. The OMAP2430 processor, combined with TI's Hollywood single-chip, delivers the most advanced total solution for TV content reception, decoding and processing on mobile handsets. The PIP function can display the contents of two real-time channels, which is ideal for those who want to preview other channels, or sports fans who want to enjoy multiple events at the same time. In addition, PVR allows users to watch pre-recorded personalized content (such as movies) while watching other channels of real-time broadcast content (such as weather forecasts, financial market intelligence, etc.). Users who need to travel frequently can take advantage of the OMAP processor's video output capabilities to see personalized content on the TV screen, whether at home or on the road.

The PVR and PIP demos use PacketVideo's pvTV client solution as a complete mobile digital TV client platform based on PacketVideo's proven video player framework. PacketVideo's pvTV solution for DVB-H has two major components: one is the pvTV client software, and the other is the pvTV reference hardware platform.

In addition, TI also demonstrated the OMAP2420 mobile DTV solution on IBC, which also integrates S3's onHandTVTM DVB-H middleware. The onHandTV solution provides a robust, proven middleware platform for mobile TV applications. This demonstration will showcase the DVB-H Group C broadcast stream at 30 frames per second supported by the PacketVideo framework. The S3 solution also implements PVR and PIP functions.

TI's OMAP 2 processor delivers low-power, high-performance multimedia processing for mobile DTV solutions, enabling consumers to enjoy the same high-end user experience as watching TV at home. Only with a powerful and reliable application engine like the OMAP2430 processor can consumers decode two channels simultaneously. The processor not only realizes the instant decoding of the TV channel, but also displays the contents of the two channels simultaneously. TI OMAP processors have been playing a major role in defining mobile entertainment, delivering high performance and high power efficiency for a variety of high quality mobile video applications to help handset manufacturers turn their phones into real entertainment centers.

As the industry's first single-chip DVB-H solution, TI's Hollywood chip has significant advantages in solution size, bill of materials, and power consumption, driving the advancement of mobile digital TV to mass-market phones and devices. The Hollywood chip can be used in a personal media player with mobile DTV capabilities that integrates a tuner, demodulator, decoder and memory on the same silicon. For such PVR and PIP applications, DVB-H receivers (such as DTV1000) must be able to handle multiple services simultaneously, such as displaying two TV channels simultaneously (picture-in-picture or side-by-side) without increasing the cost of system memory or volume.

TI partners have been actively innovating around the Hollywood chip-based DVB-H solution and have played an active role. TI has partnered with a number of companies, such as PacketVideo and S3, in the mobile DTV space to provide end-to-end solutions for mobile DTV while providing handset manufacturers with more choices. In January 2006, TI established the Mobile DTV Alliance as one of the co-founders, which is dedicated to advancing the development of mobile digital TV and accelerating the development and deployment of DVB-H in North America. The founding members of the alliance include Intel, Microsoft, Modeo, Motorola, Nokia, and TI.

It is expected that by 2007, consumers will be able to implement PVR and PIP functions on DVB-H handsets.
