Fieldbus has become one of the most important technologies in automation, often referred to as the LAN of industrial control systems. It plays a crucial role in enabling real-time and reliable data communication between distributed control nodes. CAN (Controller Area Network) is a type of fieldbus that supports efficient serial communication for distributed or real-time control applications.

Compared to traditional RS-485-based systems, which typically use a master-slave architecture with polling mechanisms, CAN offers several advantages. First, the CAN controller operates in a multi-master mode, allowing any node on the network to send data to the bus based on priority. This is achieved through a bit-by-bit arbitration process, eliminating the need for station address codes. Data is encoded so that all nodes can receive the same message simultaneously, improving system flexibility and reliability. In contrast, RS-485 systems are limited to master-slave structures, resulting in lower real-time performance and less robust communication.

Second, the CAN bus uses two physical lines—CANH and CANL—to connect to the network. These lines can only be in a high level, low level, or floating state, preventing short circuits that may occur in RS-485 networks when multiple nodes transmit at the same time. Additionally, if a node encounters a serious error, it automatically shuts down, ensuring that other nodes continue to operate without disruption. This prevents the entire network from entering a "deadlock" due to a single faulty node.

Furthermore, the well-established CAN protocol simplifies system development and reduces the time required for implementation. Unlike RS-485, which relies solely on electrical protocols, CAN provides a more complete and reliable communication framework. Compared to other fieldbuses, CAN has become an international standard due to its high speed, ease of implementation, and cost-effectiveness. These features have made it widely adopted across various industries.

CAN, or Controller Area Network, is a key technology in industrial automation. Its robust design ensures high reliability, real-time communication, and flexibility. Due to these benefits, it is extensively used in the automotive industry, where leading manufacturers like Mercedes, BMW, Porsche, Rolls-Royce, and Jaguar rely on CAN for internal vehicle communication. Beyond cars, CAN is also applied in aerospace, marine, process control, robotics, medical devices, and sensor development.

Standardized protocols such as SAE J1939/ISO 11783, CANopen, CANaerospace, DeviceNet, and NMEA 2000 further enhance its versatility. As a globally recognized fieldbus, CAN continues to evolve and remains one of the most promising technologies in modern industrial communication systems.
