WINTEC R1120 MONSTER RECEIVERS
The Forgotten Monster
"Not much is known about the Wintec R1120 or the company that built it. The company headquarters were based in an anonymous commercial suite in City of Industry, California, now the home of a printing shop. They were founded in 1976 and closed some time in '79. There were four receivers offered, the 1015, 1030, 1060 and top-of-the-line 1120, with WPC roughly represented by the last three digits of the model number. Each unit was hand tested and included it's own spec sheet. Usually the 1015 would pump out 24 watts at 0.07., typical numbers for the 1120 were 152 watts at 0.06. The R1120 features a dual mono amplifier stage, 'high-speed' output devices, five gang tuner and even a built in television tuner, surely making it the first "AV" receiver in history. The R1120 weighs in at roughly 50 pounds, measures 24" wide, 6" high and 17" deep and was built in Japan to quite a high standard with all metal face and knobs that click with a heavily oiled and precise feel to the detents. It retailed for $900 and was targeted at a the high end market. The sound quality is outstanding and can be compared to Yamahas of the same vintage; I'd describe it as accurate, un-colored but still quite musical and a touch warmer than the famous "Natural Sound". At least one Wintec integrated has been spotted on eBay, but there is nothing known about what products were offered besides the receiver line."
