1974 MARANTZ 2325 MONSTER RECEIVER
The "King of Kong"
When Pioneer's SX-1010 was first introduced, it had no serious rival. But, that did not last for long. The "Receiver Wars" officially got underway when Marantz, quickly reclaiming its crown, launched the Model 2325 later in 1974. It had 15 more watts per channel than the SX-1010, was considerably heavier and had onboard Dolby processing for FM and Tape, whereas the SX-1010 only had inputs for an external Dolby adaptor. Pictured above it what was pretty much the high-end of mainstream consumer audio in 1974, the Marantz 2325 and the Dual 721, the top of the line Direct Drive Turntable from what was then West Germany.
In the 2325, Marantz had taken the hearts from their best power amplifier, their best pre-amplifier and their best tuner and transplanted them all into one chassis. Spec for spec, the 2325 beat the SX-1010 hands down, and to this day, is considered by many Marantz collectors as the finest receiver Marantz ever made. However, the construction quality of the SX-1010 was hard to beat, as you can see from the internal views below. Many experts still consider the SX-1010, ultimately, to have the best sound of all.
The 2325 established the classic Marantz styling of the 1970's and came with an optional wood veneer enclosure. With all the lights on, it is quite stunning. And, sound-wise, when properly serviced, it can hold its own with virtually anything out there, even equipment of today.
The 2325 is easily worthy of its legendary status.
